EPA Honors 2021 Energy Star Partners of the Year in Pennsylvania

PHILADELPHIA (April 13, 2021) – The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Mid-Atlantic Region and the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) are honoring six 2021 ENERGY STAR Partners of the Year in Pennsylvania for their outstanding leadership in reducing American energy bills and tackling climate change.

"ENERGY STAR award-winning partners are showing the world that delivering real climate solutions makes good business sense and promotes job growth," said EPA Administrator Michael S. Regan. "Many of them have been doing it for years, inspiring all of us who are committed to tackling the climate crisis and leading the way to a clean energy economy."

This year, ENERGY STAR is giving special recognition to award-winning partners for their year-over-year commitment to energy efficiency through the program's highest honor: the ENERGY STAR Partner of the Year – Sustained Excellence Award. To qualify for Sustained Excellence recognition, winners must have already received ENERGY STAR Partner of the Year recognition for a minimum of two consecutive years and gone above and beyond the criteria needed to qualify for recognition.

For more than 25 years, EPA's ENERGY STAR program has been America's resource for saving energy and protecting the environment. In 2019 alone, ENERGY STAR and its partners helped American families and businesses save nearly 500 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity and avoid $39 billion in energy costs. These savings resulted in emission reductions of nearly 390 million metric tons of greenhouse gases, roughly equivalent to 5% of U.S. total greenhouse gas emissions.

The 2021 ENERGY STAR Partner of the Year – Sustained Excellence Award winners in Pennsylvania are:

  • Air King LLC America, West Chester, PA – This manufacturer of ventilation and open-air quality products offers the lowest cost ENERGY STAR certified exhaust fan on the market.
  • Bimbo Bakeries, Horsham, PA – This baking company whose brands include Thomas', Sara Lee, Entemanns, Arnold, and more achieved a 5% improvement in energy intensity over 2019.
  • PECO Energy Company, Philadelphia,PA – This electric utility successfully leveraged the ENERGY STAR label and messaging to save customers energy and money.
  • RICOH USA, Exton, PA – This information and digital services company played an integral role in facilitating the expansion of ENERGY STAR digital equipment criteria.   

The 2021 ENERGY STAR Partner of the Year Award winners in Pennsylvania are:

  • Bradford White Corporation, Ambler, PA – A manufacturer of residential, commercial, and industrial products, including water and space heating as well as storage applications.
  • PPL Electric Utilities, Allentown. PA – This electric utility leveraged ENERGY STAR messaging to increase certified heat pump water heater incentives by 89%.

Appalachian Power Company Wins EPA Honors as 2021 Energy Star Partner of the Year– Sustained Excellence Award

  • Fairfax County Public Schools, Falls Church, VA – This school district saved $6.7 million in annual energy costs and more than $38.7 million since 2014 through a comprehensive energy management system.
  • Home Energy Medics LLC, Arlington, VA – This company boosted sales by 20%, invested in staff training and revamped many of its business practices and technologies to improve service.
  • Loudon County School System, Ashburn, VA – This school district incorporated a new strategy and started a multi-year partnership with an energy services company to conduct energy efficiency retrofits.
  • Main Street Homes, Midlothian, VA – This regional homebuilder constructed more than 300 ENERGY STAR certified homes in 2020 and educated consumers about the ENERGY STAR program through extensive outreach.
  • PEG, Fairfax, VA – This home energy rating and HVAC design engineering company certified 6,000 homes as ENERGY STAR and provided standardized  HVAC design for 50,000 homes.

The 2021 ENERGY STAR Partner of the Year Award winner in Virginia is:

  • Mosely Architects, Richmond, VA – This architectural, engineering, planning and interior design firm submitted six projects that achieved Designed to Earn ENERGY STAR recognition.

  • Boma International – This trade association for commercial real estate professionals continued its leadership in promoting ENERGY STAR resources to the commercial real estate industry.
  • Cushman and Wakefield – This global real estate firm maintained its longstanding commitment to energy conservation practices and leveraged ENERGY STAR tools and resources throughout its portfolio.
  • Fannie Mae – This federally funded financial institution for multi-family housing expanded its green financing to include single family homes and raised awareness of the benefits of ENERGY STAR programs.
  • Institute for Market Transformation – This national non-profit dedicated to increasing energy efficiency in buildings expanded its integration and promotion of ENERGY STAR programs and practices.
  • Potomac Electric Power Company (Pepco) – This electric utility increased home energy savings by nearly 15% through a performance-based incentive program and surpassed its commercial savings goal with incentives for ENERGY STAR new homes which saved more the 1,300 megawatt-hours in 2020.

The 2021 ENERGY STAR Partner of the Year Award winners in D.C. are:

  • Portland Cement Association – This policy research and education organization serving America's cement manufacturers, for promoting ENERGY STAR plant certification, and fostering a relationship between its membership and the ENERGY STAR Industrial Partnership.
  • Urban Land Institute – This real estate industry group promoted the use of ENERGY STAR tools and resources through its robust network of real estate partners.

  • Baltimore Gas and Electric, Baltimore, MD – This electric utility offered a wide range of ENERGY STAR products to its residential and commercial customers – reducing energy use.
  • Bozzuto Management Company, Greenbelt, MD –  This third-party manager of multifamily communities leveraged ENERGY STAR resources to reduce energy usage across its portfolio.
  • Delmarva Power and Light, Salisbury, MD – This electric utility company exceeded energy savings of previous years while introducing ENERGY STAR certified lighting to its customers and offering incentives to improve performance with ENERGY STAR.
  • Edge Energy, Beltsville, MD – This home performance company expanded its business operations and completed a record number of residential visits and improved home energy performance in its 50th year in business.
  • Lockheed Martin Corporation, Bethesda, MD – This global security and aerospace company decreased energy intensity by 5% compared to 2019 while avoiding $34.6 million in energy costs.
  • Southern Maryland Electric Cooperative (SMECO), Hughesville, MD - This customer owned electricity cooperative promoted ENERGY STAR in the residential and consumer sectors, saving more than 35 million megawatt-hours of electricity.

The 2021 ENERGY STAR Partner of the Year Award winners in Maryland are:

  • Columbia Association, Columbia, MD – This planned community management company won the Energy Star Award for Excellence for leveraging its network of marketing resources to generate millions of targeted impressions about energy star.
  • Pando Alliance, Ellicott City, MD – This home energy rating company certified more than 850 units as ENERGY STAR in 2020 and provided preliminary design services to 40 low-income households.
