NEW YORK (Sept. 12, 2023) – Today, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) announced that it has awarded a $100,000 grant to Bergen Community College (BCC) in Paramus, New Jersey to engage students as active learners and critical thinkers with a focus on energy and resource conservation, designing for sustainability and how to be better environmental stewards.
The college, which has a large Hispanic student body, will use sustainable design challenges to keep the students invested in learning. These exercises address sustainability obstacles by encouraging creative, impactful solutions. BCC's framework will be based on the official 2020 New Jersey Student Learning Standards for Science (NJSLS-S) education that describes the expectation for what students should know and be able to do as well as promote three-dimensional science instruction across the three science domains (i.e., physical sciences, life science, earth, and space sciences). The BCC's environmental education program will bring together high school faculty, college professors, students and technical experts from industry and the community to develop solutions to design challenges taking into account new learning standards for climate change education.
"Young people hold tomorrow's solutions to today's problems and the BCC students will look at our challenges with fresh and creative eyes," said EPA Regional Administrator Lisa F. Garcia. "By giving students the tools to engage in environmental stewardship, EPA is investing in the next generation."
This school year, thanks to President Biden's Investing in America agenda, students across the country are going back to school with the opportunities for the greener and cleaner future they deserve. Through the investments in the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law and the Inflation Reduction Act, EPA is helping to build a future where all children can breathe cleaner air, drink cleaner water, and live in healthier neighborhoods.
